Thank You For The Days
Just back from a wonderful weekend away; a birthday treat from my excellent wife Solveig (in conjunction with the as-per-usual top-notch babysitting services provided by mum & dad, for which much thanks are due).

I have to admit, I said earlier in the season I thought you were in with a v good shout to win the title this year. I'm now hoping that it'll be rather like you making us main contender for last season's title (admittedly made before BFS sent it all tits up) and be completely WRONG :)
Only on alaphabetical order...game in hand...and the arse ave got to come to the Bridge.
Remember 3-0 at the effeminates!
"Only on alaphabetical order"
Er, no, on goals scored, 59 to 52. But yes, you have a game in hand. Better win it, hadn't you :)
Yup..i stand corrected. A draw would do though!
game in hand, what the fark are you two on about? Its January, FFS, you're seriously trying to say that neither team will not drop points between now and the end of May?? Bollocks to that, there are plenty of potential upsets between now and then, and in this season especially, nothing, I repeat NOTHING, should be taken as a given.
I really should be on MOTD, I'm ace.
He started it, miss.
You. Man!
Can I just say... Make sure you have a shedload (do you see what I did there?) of these to hand http://www.screwfix.com/prods/76030/Hand-Tools/Vices-Clamps/Clamps/Quick-Clamps/Wolfcraft-One-Handed-Pro-Clamp-450mm. (well, a bit smaller and cheaper, but that kind of thing)
@Andy: Righto, thanks for that; I have my Dad coming to assist (read: project manage!) so I imagine that's on the list of must-haves :)
Just moments ago, Arsenal added the 2009 FA Youth Cup to the trophy cabinet with a 6-2 aggregate victory over Liverpool. In a remarkable coincidence, tonight was the 20th anniversary of the astonishing last-gasp title-clinching goal* from Michael Thomas - also at Anfield and a game in which Steve Bould, tonight's coach, was a key member of the back four. Funny how these things work out.

Yes, in a totally unrelated coincidence, Freyja appeared for breakfast today dressed ready for Spike Island.
I'm so very proud (and ever so slightly wistful).
I am now officially ridiculously excited about the Man Utd v Arsenal Champions League Semi Final (1st Leg) in only 21 hours and 17 minutes (and the 2nd Leg next Tuesday).
Arsenal win: 15I can't even bring myself to put any money on it...
Man Utd win: 14
Draw: 8
Right.
i feel it lacks some of the sparkle of the first album (which i do really like). this is mostly the fault of the production which is so slick as to be nearly frictionless most of the time. it's only when the sheer exuberance of a particular song (fuck you very much, for example) roughens the edges a bit that i can find enough to really enjoy. not bad at all tho given how much time she must devote to appearing in the london shite.
I like this lily album too.....AND the last one...
Today's change was to my age. Yes, thirty-eight years ago (around 6.30pm, I'm told, just in time for a gin & tonic) I arrived in the world, a little yellow* bundle of joy**. From Kingston Hospital back home to Richmond*** where my mum finally got to tuck into her pork chop****.
You share a birthday with my wife. Now that /is/ posh.
Happy birthday old chap!
Today's change involves us entering the astrological sign of Aquarius, which also means it is very nearly my birthday! Now I have to admit that I am not a follower of the mystic art of astrology, as it is what is commonly known as 'a load of claptrap' but apparently Aquarians display some or all of the following traits *deep breath*
Strong-willed, stubborn, obstinate, very opinionated, conceited, far-sighted, visionary, revolutionary, original, innovative and inventive, tolerant of other views, seeing both sides of the argument, unprejudiced and objective, humane, humanitarian, altruistic, idealistic, having high expectations, friendly and sociable, inconsistent, shirking personal commitment, loyal in friendship, remote, detached, aloof, impersonal, emotionless, cold, devoted to goals, free-spirited, rebellious, hides true feelings, independent, individualistic, intelligent, intellectual, curious, seeks mental challenge, very clever, witty, unpredictable, eccentric, unconventional, misunderstood, enigmatic, magnetic, progressive, imaginative, intuitive, frank, outspoken, unwilling to participate in any standard of protocol. So we are friendly & sociable but detached & aloof, objective & progressive as well as obstinate & outspoken and loyal & enigmatic whilst still emotionless & cold.
Yeah. Stick a list of 80-odd adjectives together and some of them are going to apply to everyone. Especially if you include antonyms.
Mind you, us Aquarians are known for our cynicism...
I thought we were inconsistent :)
Have you forgotten Nick Clegg?
Oh. You haven't?

This is genius.

Just about to head off in a big old 4x4 to the Omani desert to set up camp and see in the New Year; however, breaking news suggests that Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum may have other ideas:
Bah. After over ten years without misplacing a mobile, I have only gone and lost my new SonyEricsson in Dubai. There's a lot of desert to search, but in the meantime, if you sent me a text or voicemail or tried to call in the last week or so, I will have been somewhat 'out of range'. Sorry about that.
told you you should have bought a nokia...er - anyway happy thing to you and all yours. may the sand not chafe in your mankini (or whatever one wears in dubai).

It's very, very quiet here.
I am also home alone this weekend. It's quiet just without another grown-up here. So the difference without Children must be really weird!
Brilliant idea. Who would have thought it, eh? Fans of your oeuvre might want a place to go to get high-quality versions of your archived work. Amazing. Yes, we might even click a few ads and buy a few DVDs, T-shirts and the like.
This is rapidly turning into a football blog. Sorry about that, but the quality of some/most/all of Arsenal's youngsters last night was breathtaking.Â
"Fabio Capello was in the crowd last night, and I doubt it was to watch Titus Bramble."which made me laugh a lot.Â
Who is 'next for the kids'?
Burnley.

Er, thanks, you've been very helpful.
Actually the main culprit last night was the so-called 'experienced' Niklas Bendtner, missing three clear goalscoring chances and fluffing any number of simple passes.
Paul is right; he has the control of an incontinent dachshund.
What a match.
"Sometimes you have to hold your hands up and say that if you're going to be beaten make sure it is against a team that plays football."And this is the way to win a match; watch Walcott's run across the edge of the box that drags three players out of position and opens up the gap, Nasri runs into the space, Cesc plays him in, thunderous shot, two-nil:
Congratulations!!
Nuff said
Congratulations - lots of love from the Theyers clan!
well done team lightly! we've raised a virtual glass or two for you all in irc. love t'wife an' t'babbies.
Go team Lightly!
Hurrah!
...actually it is now:
Have we all forgotten that Wenger said this team was "not ready", way back in August? If they finish third, they will have outperformed both expectations and last season. It is maturity that we need, and that will come. No need to panic buy; just build up the squad around the proven talent which is already there. All true. If you read some of the Gooner blogs, you'd think we'd just been relegated from the Ryman's Premier. Have faith chaps, this is the third young team AW has put together. Rome (or should that be Milan?) wasn't built in a day*...
not a bit of it. i too have felt the undeniable frisson of roughly cleaving a pat of normandy's finest. it appeals to the epicurean in all of us: "i am a devil-may-care, exciting, experimental, chef - i care nothing for saturates or transfats or measurements. i pity the fools microwaving their 'be good to yourself' lasagna and wish on them the early death i shall warmly embrace myself..."
bof!

That gratuitous Hot Chip reference also serves to announce that we have ripped up our somewhat tired-looking carpets and had a fantastic baked oak wooden floor laid this week. The whole of the downstairs looks like a different house; Tom has done an awesome job, highly recommended! And, of course, I have taken my usual badly-focused, over-lit pictures:

that looks absolutely fantastic. oddly, I've gone right off the solid flooring in our house - I don't think the layout of the house lends itself to wood flooring throughout, it just looks patchy.
plus, its not been done very well, also, its nowhere near as nice as the flooring you've chosen.
oh well, something to change in the future, maybe when/if we extend the back of the house - we'll have to change it then, to make sure it all matches up.
Once you start it's an endless round of improvements I find. We got new carpets last week and the new bathroom coming next. Then we'll finally be finished....except that bit we painted two years ago is starting to look battered again.*groan*
This is great info to know.
With the unfathomably popular Valentine's Day coming up, and having just seen the bill for our new wooden flooring, I thought I'd inject a hint of realism into the proceedings with this splendid comic from Dan Piraro's 'Bizarro' strip:

I have been boring everyone silly with how good the Burial albums are; I think I still prefer the eponymously-titled first one, despite the reviewers raving over 'Untrue', (which is still awesome).
Hang on, we appear to have been relegated!
It wouldn't be right to let the week pass without comment on Arsenal's 7-0 demolition of Slavia Prague in the Champions League on Tuesday. Free-flowing attacking football of the highest order at its absolute finest. The Czech champions didn't know what had hit them; they even went and apologised to their army of travelling fans at the end of the game. Two for Fabregas, two for Walcott and my man-of-the-match Hleb involved in absolutely everything.
I am not the world's biggest rugby fan.
its been a while, hasn't it?
I'm trying to recall the last time we were fifth :-(
Yes, last time we were top was immediately after the 49 game unbeaten run ended at Old Trafford - October 2004. We looked very good on Saturday (although Spurs were fairly woeful).
Fifth is OK though, you might yet scrape into the UEFA cup :)
Intertoto, if we're lucky :-(
Still, everyone intact, thats the main thing.
Well done to Klaxons for winning the Mercury Music Prize; still enjoying Myths Of The Near Future on my journey to work (and yes, I do sometimes sing the falsetto bit in Golden Skans as we pull into Lewisham station, so what?) and I really should have stuck a tenner on them; could have got 9-1 apparently :(
I know I have been banging on about him for ages but finally the England selectors gave Stuart Broad his chance in the ODI series against India. So how did he do, I hear you cry? Only career-best figures of 4-51 with the ball, followed by a match-winning 45 not out in an English record 8th wicket partnership of 99 with Ravi Bopara. England were reeling at 114-7 but eventually won by 3 wickets and take a 3-1 lead in the seven match series. Bravo!

Nothing to do with green potatoes, this is another really polished album of pop mashups. So far; so last year. However, they're all based around tracks from a long-forgotten LP called 'Hot Boppin' Instrumentals', lending a rather pleasant 'lounge' feel to recent chart smashes from (amongst others): Spears, Aguilera, Stefani and even The Jaxx:
OK, I'll kick off - for me it's Where Is Your Croix, closely followed by Rainy Joints.
Smoooooooooove.
I went to my first ever Lewisham Bloggers Meetup last Friday night, handily enough held at our excellent local, The Honor Oak.
Nice to meet you Adrian; I think you can assume you're in!
yes, thanks for the nice comments. as with all these things, the first meeting is the tough one.
just imagine what we are like on the second date!
look forward to meeting up again soon, and if you really want reminding about the underground waterways, let me know
I cannot claim to be right all the time, but Broad named in England Test squad gave me a somewhat polite 'glow' today.
I saw CMJ trying to argue - in The Times yesterday - that it was too early for Broad, and pointing to the promise/failure ratio amongst a number of other young England bowlers that have been through the squad in recent years.
I think he's got a point that Team England seem to have been through a number of fast bowlers in the wake of the 2005 season, but I'm not sure his prescription - going back to Andrew Caddick - would send the right message either.
No, that would be madness. I see they have drafted in Tremlett as a more obvious direct replacement for Harmison. Although equally, he has been known to spray it about just as much as the giant grumbling Geordie.
Broad, for me, has more control, even when fired up out in the middle in the heat of a run chase. I guess we're about to find out!
I hear he bats a bit too, which I'm sure will be a consideration...
You don't play yourself, do you Andrew? We might be a few short for a match in Honor Oak on Saturday!!
Oh how these words filled me with joy as they 'pinged' into my Inbox at 9:02am this morning.

So England won the first ODI against the West Indies yesterday, quite comfortably in the end (by 79 runs) after some excellent bowling by my top tip for 2007, Stuart Broad:

I know England won convincingly but beating the Windies makes Baby Jesus cry. I want them to be brilliant again...
are you buying one for Solveig?
Sssshhhhhh.....
Fred Deakin (yes, him out of Lemon Jelly) has just released "The Triptych", a fantastic 3-CD album in which he ushers us on a musical meandering in a clapped-out campervan through the busy B-roads of his extremely extensive vinyl vaults. Eclectic? You bet. Ninety tracks of juxtapositional jump-cut and segway surprises await...

I got my copy from those extremely nice people at (pigeonhold-endorsed!) Disque who casually mentioned that there was a 'mystery' 4th CD containing tracks that they couldn't licence for the official release. So they sent me that as well! And then, they threw in some promos to make up for the extra cost of the postage! Two thumbs up for the mighty Disque please, people.

Go and buy Klaxons' album, "Myths Of The Near Future". It's brilliant. They have somehow got the "new-rave" tag (although I read somewhere that they actually invented the 'scene' as a joke and then instantly detached themselves from it) but it is thoughtful and musical with emotive chord progressions and proper fast drumming and nice 80s influences and danceable tunes and a hint of tongue-in-cheek prog-rock hanging about as well. Go and get it, looks like this:
Magick.
I have just about recovered from the drama of the extra-time win over Spurs at the Emirates last night. We had decent seats just above the

I am a very simple man, easily pleased. One of the best presents I received this Christmas was a new set of kitchen tongs, by Cuisipro:
They utilise a fairly strong spring for a firm feel but the scalloped arms also have gently pointed ends for moving more delicate food items. The hooked part at the top also operates the clever twist mechanism which locks them in the closed position. They truly rock. And I am very sad :)
In the interest of global unity, a very Happy Juche 96 to one and all! Apparently, it is the fashion to set out one's resolutions for the year at this juncture so I hereby declare that I intend to finally get around to thinking about making plans for setting in motion the process of starting to ruminate on the idea of writing a will*. Oh, and to procrastinate less :)

Doug and I drew up wills just after Jacob was born. They're still sitting in a pile of paper somewhere, unsigned and unwitnessed. God, we're organised.
I was lucky enough to attend the Square Mile Sports Awards recently which was, and this may surprise you, a somewhat boozy affair. Arbuthnot sponsored a table, took along some brokers & traders and a very good time was had by all. The winner of Sportsman Of The Year was ... [checks hastily scrawled notes] ... Darren Clarke, for his heroics at the Ryder Cup, but what puzzles me is the reminder I put in my phone (after possibly the eleventy-third bottle of Veuve Clicquot), which simply said:
Good lord, how time flies. Over a month since I last posted. Admittedly, it was a fairly quiet month - or so I thought until I started writing this.

I seriously want to try that Scotch egg.
I also love the restaurant you went to. Have you been to the Yew Tree?

I think I might try it when I'm there in March, PM me if you're interested in a trip out to Newbury.
I mean, if you're interested in driving us out to Newbury when I'm there!
Sounds like you had a really great time... it's good to get the chance to unwind.
According to this week's edition of Heat, Jude Law and Sienna Miller were spotted in said Hind's Head, "looking v much a couple". Can you confirm or deny?
Do you know the most bizarre thing. It didn't click with me at all Katherine and I have stayed at that hotel it was the one which had the toilet in the bedroom that slightly freaked me out.
We were there for a wedding so didn't have dinner just breakfast but that was very good.
