Thank You For The Days

Our team Christmas lunch this year was at Ronnie Scott's jazz club, where you can enjoy an afternoon of food and wine accompanied by sets from three different performers (credit to Dei, our editor, for this inspired idea!) We heard a piano trio, then a great tenor saxophonist and finally a female vocalist, who really whipped the audience up into a festive frenzy, especially with her versions of classic Christmas numbers done in the musical style of the audience's choosing (the dub reggae 'Silent Night' was hilarious). It was a pretty tremendous way to spend an afternoon.
Dude that was class - best bit was the arty pause so you could neck some more wine!
If only we knew you had such mad skillz at Chateau Giggles, we could've broadcast Kazoo Aid to the world
Nice work!

There are some things in life to which you want to be first.
Everything!
The peanut butter is a big one for me. But as I am the only one in my house to eat it I know I have no competition for it and so it is slightly less enjoyable than it once was.
i rather like sticking the spoon through the papery foil at the top of a jar of instant coffee. can't stand instant coffee obviously tho, so it's a bit of a waste.
@Chris: The Meaning Of Liff came up with a word for the noise that makes, if I recall correctly. I think it was 'Fot'. Anyone have the book to hand?
yep, spoon through the foil of a jar of instant coffee is excellent, although slightly marred by the fact that instant coffee is ack.
I like opening bags of ground coffee (the smell is awesome), breaking the seal on a bottle of spirits (that glug glug sound of the first glass poured) and like opening the sort of things that are set or frozen in an ornate manner - like a tub of carte d'or or something similar.
First dip in the marmite is definitely up there, but smooth peanut better has to win. It HAS TO.
Marmite? Peanut Butter?
Eurgh!
I like to be the first person to walk in fresh snow, and i like to be the first on the bus, so i can run to the back and push all the teenagers out of the way.
lol, when I use to work in the coffee shop in Blackpool, I had a woman ask me for a bigger slice of gateaux than I was cutting her - but then asked if we had any half fat cream :))
Today's change was dificult to choose, as there were two.
Today's change was yoghurt, instead of granola, for breakfast. Our local Pret has said it is stopping its granola offering shortly (the fools) and it has been in increasingly short supply all week. Still, yoghurt clearly still counts as 'gloop' so my January resolution* is still intact. Two more days and counting...
Today's change was actually an additional change from yesterday (I know, I know, so sue me...)
blimey!
that's marvellous though, well done, I am so glad. We'll have to go out for a slap up fish supper next time I'm in the Great Wen ;)
I know, I was quite taken aback :)
Still a huge block about fishier tasting things - anchovies, FFS? - but I have turned the corner. Next stop, scallops.
Today's change was a last-minute invitation to lunch with one of our vendors, which was rather nice. There's a lot of it about at the moment; anyone would think they were the teensiest bit worried about the threat of major cost-saving contract negotiations amongst City brokerage institutions...
Today's change was a visit to a new (to us) restaurant, Sapporo Ichiban in Catford Broadway. What can I say - fantastic Japanese food including fresh gyoza, ramen, teriyaki & katsu, all made to order in front of you and at credit-crunch prices. Whilst nothing to look at from the outside, the 'sunken' tables at the rear are an fun & interesting feature and it would be worth coming with a big group and taking advantage of the unlimited buffet, with a shed-load of Sapporo (what else!) Did I mention they do takeaway as well? We have a new favourite place...
Last Saturday, we suddenly had a free weekend so Solveig decided to get her hair done in East Dulwich. We piled into the dark-green-medium-sized-middle-aged-French-family-car and thought we might take in some breakfast on the way. Due to some serious faffing (me) in Ed, it turned out that we didn't have very much time in the end and in a bit of a panic we stumbled through the doors of what I initially thought was just a wine shop but which turned out to be attached to a really fantastic little café called Green & Blue on Lordship Lane.
...and Theo was impeccably behaved as usual:
Up to the park at Goose Green next for some running and sliding and climbing and rocking and swinging...
...where I noticed the Carhartt-clad Dulwich dads were out in force (eight of them - I rather got the feeling they're turfed out on a Saturday morning and told not to come back until Football Focus is on). Quality time indeed - added to which, Solveig came back with a great new haircut and we bought fantastic food (lamb rolls, sweet potato pies, harissa & bean salad) from the Northcross Road street market for an al fresco lunch back home in the garden:
Lovely.Nice shots! Yes, G&B is a great place (for the wine as well as everything else).
Are you coming down to the gathering of bloggers at The Honor Oak this evening? I'm poping later (once our two are in bed).
Ah, I didn't know about it (curse you Facebook!).
Need to pack for holidays this weekend so probably not. Bah...
shame! have a good holiday
Ever feel peckish at a railway station but feel they bump the prices up because of a 'captive audience'? Well you can get 20% off with the BiTE card...
Adrian - bit late in the day, but just in case you check email compulsively, like me, there is a Mums-and-Dads-to-be gathering in the Honor Oak at 4 today (22/03) with lots of fellow 'expectants'
I assume you have not yet doubled your tally?
I have posted this mainly to make Antonia snigger, but also because you simply cannot have too much bacon:
Is it Fathers' Day soon?
And the double awesome thing is that the whole book is also available online, for free gratis, nilch:But you know you really, really want the print edition, don't you. I do. Oh, yeah."Cooking With Booze, the book, was published in the UK in October 2007, in a very traditional form. But it’s a book that couldn’t have happened without the web, so I thought I should give something back. Here it is: the complete text of CWB, online for all. If you like the book, cook one of the recipes and enjoy it, I’d be very grateful if you’d buy a copy, but if not, no worries."
Who knew?

Bob, who sometimes comments on my and Antonia's blog posted a link to something similar, but it was a moose :-)
Ah, I was not aware of such. However, I did think that this one bore a passing resemblance to Ian :)
so did the moose..... ;-)
I am officially old.
Waitress: "Can I get you gentlemen something to drink?"
Me: "Look, I can't hear a single word you're saying; can you possibly turn this dreadful racket down a bit?"
Waitress: "A Malibu & dry ginger, a pint of snakebite and a pair of Campari shooters?"
Me: "Yes, but can we have one with mash?"
Waitress: "No, it's the last door on the left, can't miss it."
Now I have to admit that I really like bacon. And Solveig would readily confirm that she really likes chocolate. So, how do we resolve this marital issue? OK, I'll tell you how:
"Deep milk chocolate coats your mouth and leads to the crunch of smoked bacon pieces. Surprise your mouth with the smoked salt and sweet milk chocolate combination."Labels: food
No, really - how to 'knit' marzipan:

I went to my first ever Lewisham Bloggers Meetup last Friday night, handily enough held at our excellent local, The Honor Oak.
Nice to meet you Adrian; I think you can assume you're in!
yes, thanks for the nice comments. as with all these things, the first meeting is the tough one.
just imagine what we are like on the second date!
look forward to meeting up again soon, and if you really want reminding about the underground waterways, let me know
Amazing what you can find to go with your cheeseburger, isn't it:
After the plush meat, this is the obvious next level:

Interesting article in theGuardian about the meat/veg dichotomy amongst couples:
I used to say I would never go out with anyone who ate meat. Ha! How wrong I was.
Good article though. Thumbs up for Norrington-Davies.
Now you can recreate that Ibizan villa holiday* in the comfort of your own ham, sorry, home:

I heard about this on the radio the other day. Culinary genius. Can't wait to get some.
Ian has both feet firmly in the Marmite-hating camp, and would probably find a ham & anchovy smoothie more palatable.
I do love sprouts. Try sprout mash, with cream and parmesan. Mmmmm.
4 Comments:
I seriously want to try that Scotch egg.
I also love the restaurant you went to. Have you been to the Yew Tree?
http://www.theyewtree.net/
I think I might try it when I'm there in March, PM me if you're interested in a trip out to Newbury.
I mean, if you're interested in driving us out to Newbury when I'm there!
Sounds like you had a really great time... it's good to get the chance to unwind.
According to this week's edition of Heat, Jude Law and Sienna Miller were spotted in said Hind's Head, "looking v much a couple". Can you confirm or deny?
Do you know the most bizarre thing. It didn't click with me at all Katherine and I have stayed at that hotel it was the one which had the toilet in the bedroom that slightly freaked me out.
We were there for a wedding so didn't have dinner just breakfast but that was very good.
